FAQ & Mythbusters

The Million Dollar Question: I am new to the keto diet and lifestyle. Where do I start?

Start with the fun part, what to eat! You will need to gain a knack for measuring, recording and reading nutrition labels. Every person is different, thus carb tolerances differ, however generally when you are starting the ketogenic diet you should not exceed 25 grams of net carbs per day (net carbs=total carbs-fiber). Additionally protein consumption should be between 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. But, instead of doing all this by hand, use our favorite keto calculator here:

After you have figured out what you can eat, plan your meal prep. This is as essential as the actual food you eat on a ketogenic diet. You do not want to be caught without snacks or without knowing what to eat in a bind. There are a lot of good recipes and resources, here's a couple that we have used:

Exercise. If you intend to live an active keto lifestyle it's important to note that initially performance may decline but will quickly rebound with adaptation--and use of exogenous ketone supplementation can mitigate most of this decline!

Adaptation into nutritional ketosis takes weeks. Every person is different but for a male expect an adaptation period of three to five weeks, for women four to seven weeks, assuming strict diet adherence. The good news is once you are keto-adapted, or into nutritional ketosis, you can play with carbohydrate tolerances to determine if you can increase carbs to higher levels before being "kicked out" of ketosis. To determine success, test ketone levels regularly. Ketone levels can be tested three ways:

1. Blood (most accurate): Blood meters measures beta-hydroxybutyrate in blood. To measure, you can use a blood ketone meter like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Precision-Blood-Glucose-Monitoring-System/dp/B000N64MZA/ref=sr_1_2_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1478208914&sr=8-2&keywords=blood%2Bketone%2Bmonitor&th=1. However, you must also purchase blood ketone test strips, sold separately. For blood testing methods, we recommend several tests at thirty, forty-five and an hour and fifteen minutes after ingestion of ketones. Blood values are measured in mmol/l.

2. Urine (easiest, least expensive): Ketone Test Strips show the excess concentration of Acetoacetate in the urine, or in other words, unused ketones that are being excreted. These strips will clearly indicate whether or not ketones are present in the body, but are not indicative of maximum ketone levels achieved during diet and/or supplementation. For urine testing methods, we recommend testing two to three hours after ingestion of ketones.

3. Breath: Breath analysis measures acetate in your breath. Breath ketones are measure in PPM (Parts per Million). For directions, refer to device instructions.

And there you have it. Eat meat, cheese, eggs and minimal carbs and, ta-da! Ketosis...well, kind of. Be patient and remember that each person's body reacts differently. Let us know if you have any questions. We answer all sorts of questions, even those not product related. We are here to help!

Ketosis vs Ketoacidosis

To confirm, these are completely unrelated. Ketosis is a diet-induced condition that causes the body to break down fat and fatty acids for energy because of a shortage of glucose, normally from a low-carbohydrate diet, prolonged fasting or starvation.

Ketoacidosis is a condition, usually only of concern to Type 1 diabetics, where the body cannot use blood glucose to produce energy due to lack of insulin and therefore breaks down muscle mass, fat, and fatty acids.

Ketones, or ingesting exogenous ketones, do not cause harm to the body because insulin keeps a check on ketone production. However in diabetic ketoacidosis, the blood becomes extremely acidic because of high sugar intake, resulting in inadequate insulin and a large excess of ketones. For those with a pre-exisitng medical condition, such as diabetes, we certainly recommend consulting a doctor before use and monitoring glucose/blood sugar closely.

Why should I use KetoCaNa/KetoForce? What are the benefits?

Ketones act as the fuel your body uses, and prefers, when you go into a ketogenic state. Now you do not have to be in a ketogenic state to benefit from the power of ketones.

Once you change your diet, it takes about seven to ten days to achieve nutritional ketosis (sometimes longer for women). However, with ketone supplementation it is possible achieve identical blood ketone levels in a single serving. This is important for many reasons. Most notably, ketone supplementation helps ease ketoflu symptoms and increases workout efficiency, even for those not yet keto-adapted. For those who are keto-adapted, exgenous ketones provide ample energy for workouts and endurance events after your own ketones (and glycogen stores) have been depleted. Ketones have a variety of applications in many different fields so if you don't see your intended use here, just give us a shout and we will help in any way we can.

Exogenous ketones make you lose fat.

Not really. It is important to note the difference between nutritional ketosis and ketosis. Nutritional ketosis is the fat burning, low carb, fuel efficient mountain peak that everyone hopes to attain when embarking on a ketogenic diet. Ketosis, by definition, means the presence of ketones in the blood stream. Exogenous ketones induce ketosis, but only greatly limiting carb intake for a long period of time will achieve nutritional ketosis. Consumption of exogenous ketones helps ease this process. The single most common reason people abandon the ketogenic diet is because most consider it hard to adhere to. But, with the use of exogenous ketones, the transition into nutritional ketosis is significantly easier.

What's the difference between KetoSports' exogenous ketone products and others on the market?

The major difference is the amount of BHB (the active ingredient). It is estimated that most other products contain about 5 grams (though some will not explicitly state it on their label), while KetoCaNa and KetoForce contain 11.7 grams. Additionally, since KetoCaNa and KetoForce do not contain MCT, so these products are less likely to cause GI upset, when compared to other supplementation. KetoCaNa and KetoForce are also lactose free and contain no artificial coloring, flavoring, sweeteners or preservatives.

How many ketones is too much?

You cannot overdose on ketones because the body will excrete any unused ketones. However, since ketones in most formulations are accompanied by a mineral component (i.e. sodium/potassium or calcium), you will need to be mindful of how much of these minerals are in each serving so that you do not consume too much of any mineral. For example, since most foods you eat will also contain sodium, we recommend not exceeding three doses of KetoCaNa per day and increasing water intake.

I take this product and get stomach cramps and/or diarrhea. What's wrong?

Unfortunately this is normal when first taking ketone/MCT supplements and should subside within a few days with continued use. It is usually the worse on the very first dose. If it does not subside after three days, you may split the dose in half and ingest 45-60 minutes apart, until adapted. We also recommend taking with food if GI upset occurs, otherwise this supplement can be taken with or without food.

Do I have to exercise when using these products?

It depends on application. If utilizing KetoSports products as part of a health and fitness goal, then yes. The most immediate benefits can be seen in workout endurance when using KetoForce/KetoCaNa thirty minutes before a workout, or intraworkout. If using for mental acuity or fatigue, dose thirty to forty-five minutes before energy is required.

How do I know that these products are working?

You can test your ketone levels three ways:

Are these ketones the same as Raspberry ketones?

No. Ketone by definition is "any of a class of organic compounds (as acetone) characterized by a carbonyl group attached to two carbon atoms" and is more indicative of atomic makeup then actual function. These products are not similar in any way.

Can I take these products as a tested athlete?

To the best of our knowledge, none of KetoSports' products appear on any nationally recognized banned or controlled substances list. However, we always urge athletes and military personnel to check first with their governing organization prior to the implementation of any new supplement or regimen.

When should I use these products?

Refer to product instructions and dosing. Most products vary depending on application. When using KetoForce/KetoCaNa as a preworkout, ingest thirty minutes before a workout, or intraworkout for longer workouts. If using for mental acuity or fatigue, dose thirty to forty-five minutes before energy is required. These products can be taken with or without food. Many users dose first thing in the morning to fight "ketoflu" symptoms.
